Cybersecurity, explained simply
Cybersecurity has a reputation for being complicated and intimidating. It doesn't have to be. Strip away the jargon and it comes down to a few straightforward ideas anyone can understand — and act on.
What we're actually protecting
Security professionals talk about three simple goals: keeping information private (confidentiality), keeping it accurate and untampered (integrity), and keeping it available when you need it (availability). Almost every security decision serves one of those three.
How attackers get in
Most attacks rely on a few reliable routes: tricking people (phishing), guessing or stealing passwords, and exploiting systems that haven't been updated or were poorly configured. Sophisticated attacks exist, but the everyday ones are surprisingly ordinary.
The ideas that matter most
- Layers: no single control is perfect, so good security stacks several
- Least privilege: people and systems should only access what they truly need
- Patch early: most breaches exploit weaknesses that already had a fix available
- Assume you'll be tested: attackers are automated and relentless, so plan for it
Where testing fits in
You can't secure what you can't see. A security assessment is simply a professional, authorised check that finds the gaps before an attacker does — and explains them clearly enough that you can actually close them.
Good security isn't about fear. It's about understanding your risks and making calm, informed decisions.
