Five common security mistakes (and how to avoid them)
After enough assessments, patterns emerge. The issues that put people and businesses at risk are rarely exotic zero-days — they're the same handful of avoidable mistakes, repeated everywhere. The good news: awareness is most of the fix.
1. Reusing passwords everywhere
One leaked password becomes a master key when it's reused across accounts. A password manager and unique credentials for every service is the single highest-impact habit you can adopt.
2. Skipping multi-factor authentication
Passwords get phished and leaked constantly. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) means a stolen password alone isn't enough. Enable it everywhere it's offered — especially email, which is the recovery route for everything else.
3. Leaving default settings in place
Routers, cameras, admin panels and applications often ship with default credentials and permissive settings. Attackers know every default. Changing them is basic, essential hygiene.
4. Never updating firmware and software
Updates aren't just features — they patch known vulnerabilities. Unpatched routers, plugins and libraries are among the easiest ways in. Turn on automatic updates where you can, and review the rest regularly.
5. Assuming you're too small to be a target
Most attacks aren't targeted — they're automated, sweeping the internet for anything vulnerable. Being small doesn't make you invisible; it often just means weaker defences.
